Top Reads 2019

December 2019

A year with many changes — MBA, new job, new cities — meant that reading took a backseat. However, managed quite a bit of momentum (crept past a century at 101), especially when travelling. Naturally, read a lot on the new role: operations and culture were a big portion, as well as class-related economics and strategy. It became clear how different reading for pleasure and reading for need really is. Nonetheless, always interesting to explore new topics. Enjoy!

Talking to Strangers — Malcolm Gladwell

One that helps you reframe how you trust others or spot deception, especially when it matters the most.

The Uninhabitable Earth — David Wallace-Wells

A painful read on all the different possible downstream effects of climate change, highlighting the worst-case scenario if it continues at the current pace.

Raise Your Game — Alan Stein Jr.

As an NBA/basketball fan, a nice read on how a top-level trainer works with elite performers and what separates them from the rest.

Salt: A World History — Mark Kurlansky

Endlessly fascinating read on the intertwine behind what is now a basic commodity with the shaping of our current world — including wars, taxes and our economic landscape.

Can't Hurt Me — David Goggins

If you need a read that puts you back on the literal or figurative treadmill, this is the one — from an ex-SEAL and ultramarathoner.

    Execution — Larry Bossidy

A book that promotes the less glamorised end of work — operational discipline.

Trust Me, I'm Lying — Ryan Holiday

A hard look at the media landscape — with manipulation, lies and bad incentives that will change how you consume and evaluate media.

    Inspired — Marty Cagan

Pretty much the textbook of product management and a huge primer on product teams working on outcomes versus tech teams working on features.

One Plus One Equals Three — David Trott

Interesting book on creative thinking. Fast, quick read.

The Goal — Eliyahu M. Goldratt

Must-read, novel-like book on the theory of constraints.
