Top Reads 2021

December 2021

First year breaking the streak of 100 books. New city, new job, and minimal transit or travel meant it was hard to carve out reading time. Despite that, found a few gems among a mostly wide-ranging list — reads on power, comedians and Jungian theory made a strong impression.

The Infinite Game — Simon Sinek

An outlook changer that helps you differentiate and reframe how you engage with others — through the lens of finite games with fixed rules and clear ends, or infinite games.

    Moral Animal — Robert Wright

Evolutionary psychology applied to human behaviour, explaining how certain human characteristics like altruism and jealousy can be reproductively useful.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull — Richard Bach

Short parable on pursuing mastery despite the doubters.

The Dictator's Handbook — Bruce Bueno De Mesquita

Fun read on the mechanisms that autocrats apply to stay in power.

    Scale — Geoffrey West

A book that helps you understand why and how power laws apply to scaling — from biology to business.

How Asia Works — Joe Studwell

Succinct and clear read on how a few Asian economies like South Korea and Taiwan succeeded at industrialising while others in the region failed.

The Happiness Hypothesis — Jonathan Haidt

A must-read on modern research around happiness and the levers we have to improve it.

The Righteous Mind — Jonathan Haidt

Another Haidt read, this time on the values that people on different political spectrums hold and how those values both justify gut reactions and shape worldview.

Let My People Go Surfing — Yvon Chouinard

Inspiring read from the founder of Patagonia on his early days and leadership philosophy.

The Long Tail — Chris Anderson

Interesting book on the economics of the internet and how value can still be unlocked in the long tail, as opposed to the winner-take-all dynamics near the top.
