Top Reads 2023

December 2023

Kept to roughly a book a week, with work engagements, new hobbies and work-related courses taking up some of the slack. The highlights were reads about fields well outside my day-to-day — from semiconductor supply chains to commodities trading. There's a particular kind of clarity that comes from studying industries you don't work in.

The World For Sale — Javier Blas & Jack Farchy

A fascinating intro into the industry of commodity trading and its influence on the larger economy.

    Chip War — Chris Miller

Another industry-specific intro read — this time into semiconductors and how they interplay with the geopolitical landscape.

Status and Culture — W. David Marx

A sociological exploration of how status intersects with culture and "value" in society. Useful to think about in the context of brand positioning.

How We Got to Now — Steven Johnson

A deep dive into six major innovations that brought us to modern times. I wouldn't have thought hard about some of them — like glass and refrigeration — before reading this.

Principles For Dealing With The Changing World Order — Ray Dalio

A systems-thinking approach to long-term empire decline and economic cycles.

Bonus
Working Backwards — Colin Bryar & Bill Carr
A Thousand Brains — Jeff Hawkins
